If you are a busy person, whether it be school in general, sports, work, or other activities, you'll want to choose a season when you aren't as busy.

What are the pictures for?

If you're going to use the images for your senior yearbook ad, you'll want to book in the summer before your senior year or right at the beginning of the school year. If you're the type to send out yearly updates on your holiday cards, then definitely schedule your senior portraits before November. For students wanting to use their images for graduation announcements, you have the greatest flexibility. Your senior portrait session can take place anytime between the summer before and May of your graduation year.

What are your preferred seasons?

If you're not a fan of bugs, heat, or humidity, summer is not for you. If you are lucky enough to have spring or fall allergies, go with the opposite season. Those who hate the cold, should avoid winter at all costs.

Summer Senior Portraits

Summer is popular for seniors who are busy with sports and band activities, during the school year. Sports and band participants often become too busy before school even begins. Taking senior portraits in the summer gets them out of the way so have more opportunity for other senior activities, during the school year. Summer sessions are also popular for ladies who want pictures in flower fields or those who enjoy lush and bright landscapes.

Another positive to a summer senior portrait session is the flexibility in outfits. Many seniors take advantage of the cute clothes and show off the tan they have worked all summer on.

Golden hour is a popular time for all photography sessions and summer allows the longest golden hours. Longer golden hours mean I have greater flexibility in my schedule, for booking.

Fall Senior Portraits

Fall is preferred by a majority of seniors wanting to have their pictures taken. The number one reason, seniors prefer fall, is the cooler temperatures. Heat and humidity are pretty much non-existent during September, October, and November. The weather is nice enough, during fall, that summer and winter clothes can be worn. An added plus, the colors of fall foliage are gorgeous in the background of senior portraits. Fall time also brings out another level of positivity as seniors begin their last grade school year. The anticipation for what comes next starts to rise, bringing out joy in your images. Those who complete their senior session in the fall are able to use their pictures for the yearbook, holiday cards, and graduation announcements.

Autumn tends to be more difficult when looking for a photographer with availability due to the rush of families wanting to update their photos for holiday cards and shorter days. So, take into consideration, booking well in advance!

Winter Senior Portraits

Winter is the least favorite season among all photography sessions due to the cold, unpredictable weather. For some seniors, though, it's their least busy time of the year, which makes it perfect for their session. Always bring a jacket to wear between locations within walking distance. Also, don't be surprised if your session needs to be scheduled in the early afternoon because winter days are extremely short.

Spring Senior Portraits

Spring offers beautiful flowers and minimal bugs, making it another ideal time for senior photography sessions. By May, temperatures are perfect for being outside. When scheduling your senior session in the spring, you will reflect who you are at the end of your senior year accurately. Often times, seniors like to include their cap and gown into their portrait session, and those come out in the spring, even more reason to wait.
