What is a wedding flat lay?
A wedding flat lay is a collection of items, put together by the photographer with items from the bride, that are intentionally arranged to create an editorial styled image. A photographer will use stationary items, accessories, and any other items provided by the bride to create wedding flat lay images. Items are placed on a flat surface (hence the name flat lay) and are photographed from above. Flat lay not only come in handy for the bride and groom, but wedding vendors too. It's a great way to showcase their work in social media posts and blogs. If you haven't received a list of items from your photographer, reach out and see if they plan to do a flat lay image and what items you should bring along.
What to include in your flat lay?
Personally, I like to arrive to my weddings early, in order to collect flat lay items, from the bride, and to introduce myself to not only those in the wedding party I haven't met, but the other staff members/vendors who are helping move the day along smoothly. Each photographers' flat lay kit will be different, curated with their preferred items. Your personal items are what makes every flat lay personal to you and your wedding day. I recommend, to all my brides, gathering your items and putting them in a sturdy box. This way, when I arrive all items are ready to go. My goal is to get these items back to you quickly, so you can finish getting ready.
- Wedding Stationary: A complete set of the save-the-date, invitations, envelope, RSVP card, menu card, or any other paper items you have sent to guests. Leave the envelope open, so there is no chance in tearing. Your envelope can be left blank or have it addressed to the Mr. and Mrs.
- Wedding Rings: Include your engagement rings and wedding bands. Part of my kit, as a photographer, includes ring boxes and trays that will fit your color shceme. Unless you have a special box you've customized, I'd love to include it in the flat lay images.

- Flowers/Greenery: As a photographer, I will ask for your bouquet. You should ask your florist to include a few loose pieces, to be used as well. If you're interested in a groom specific flat lay, I encourage you to include a boutonniere. Other ideas include yellow/orange leaves if you're having a fall themed wedding.
- Ribbons: An item I carry in my flat lay kit. However, if you have something specific in mind, don't hesitate to include it.
- Shoes + Accessories: Shoes for the bride and groom are a must! Even if they're just Converse. Other items such as earrings, bracelets, necklaces, tie/bow-tie, cuff links, perfume bottles, etc. will also give a personal touch to your wedding flat lay.

- Trinkets: I have a few extra trinkets to include, in my kit, but if you have something special to include, don't hesitate to. I'd love to see it! Embroidered handkerchiefs, family heirlooms, wax seal stamp, or your 'something blue' are just a few cute additives.
- Vow Books: If you are planning to write your own vows, vow books are a sweet way to include them into your flat lay set up.
